News Release | July 30, 2010 | Reference: Felix Paz, chairman, KMP-Bikol and national council member, KMP |  The militant Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) welcomed the Supreme Court (SC) ruling that the sugar mill in the sprawling plantation owned by President Aquino’s family had acted in “bad faith” when it reduced its workers’ 13th month pay following a violent strike that left 14 people dead.

According to Felix Paz, chairman of KMP-Bikol and concurrent national council member of KMP, “this is a welcome development and we hope that the SC can also decide soon on the agrarian case, the scrapping of the Stock Distribution Option (SDO) and the distribution of the plantation to the farm workers,”

In a unanimous July 26 decision that was released yesterday, the court’s second division ordered Central Azucarera de Tarlac (CAT), which operates the sugar mill and refinery in Hacienda Luisita, to honor its long-established formula in computing the bonus.

“The SC should act with dispatch so that the long suffering farm workers can finally own the land they till and be alleviated from their plight,” ended Paz. # # #
